Christmas in a Welsh Castle

Cosy Christmas with a difference ?

Have a look at The Bodelwyddan Castle in North Wales (close to Rhyl and about an hour from Chester).

For a four night Christmas Break or three night New Year Break a full board stay at The Bodelwyddan Castle is really something to remember.

Characterful rooms - full of charm and dating back to the 1800's but fully updated with modern touches. Some rooms feature four poster beds. The cosiest rooms at The Bodelwyddan Castle are The Royale Rooms - located in the original castle - of which they are only twleve. The signature rooms are modern and tasteful with all mod cons.

First Class Leisure & Dining - There's a heated indoor swimming pool, sauna, fitness room and steam room and by the time you have enjoyed the leisure facilites or taken a stroll in the 200 acres of stunning park land with The Clwydian mountains as the backdrop, you'll deserve a meal at the newly refurbished St. Davids restaurant with a great choice of British favourites.

Cosy family hotel in London

Why:
You do not have to pay a lot extra for stuff you do not use the hotel bar, restaurant and room service. The hotel is also centrally located and you can walk to the best shopping. There is a small kitchen in the rooms where you can fix your own breakfast and warm baby food. You can also order a breakfast box if you prefer not to cook.

Accommodation:
There are rooms with bunk beds - a classic! All rooms are spacious and modern feel. You can book a family room with two double beds or one double bed and sofa bed. In the rooms there is also TV for us who do not want to miss anything.

Food:
The hotel offers "Home Delivery" from some 20 different restaurants and do nothing extra for this. You promised to food for 1 hour.

Bring:
As always, beautiful shoes! For us it was also good with the Baby Bjorn baby carrier, for London's Underground is not so pushchair friendly.

Shopping:
The hotel is close to South Kensington where there's lot of good shopping. It is also walking distance to Kings Road, Chelsea where Heal's, Cath Kidston and Couverture lies. Less clothing stores and boutiques are on the streets around Covent Garden. There is also Paul Smith's stores, Agnes B and even Orla Kiely has both interior and clothing.
The best I think: Bliss, Every time I go to London so I'm going berserk inside the Bliss Store. I want everything! So again! Go there and your wallet will be empty afterwards, but you will hopefully look younger. Bliss, 60 Sloane Ave.

The man thinks:
Tate Modern, London's art museum, this one could spend several days. There are many exhibits to see. Do not miss the restaurant at the top overlooking the River Thames and do not forget the gift shop.

Blue Chip Vacations

Cosy cottages in Devon

We have found an excellent website for some very cosy accommodation in a wonderful part of England.

Blue Chip Vacations specialise in top rated self catering accommodation in Devon and Cornwall.

They have over 500 properties, the majority of which are 4 or 5 star rated by VisitBritain. As a bit of a showcase we are looking into one set of properties that caught our eye :

The Glebe House Cottages
in Holsworthy, Devon are a collection of listed buildings from the 19th Century in a countryside retreat setting. It's a wonderful area for walking, horse riding and fishing and also just a few miles from a great Devon beach. On the 5 acre site there is a heated pool and tennis court set in the gardens and woodland.

The cottages have great features for a cosy holiday such as exposed beams, and some bedrooms feature four poster beds. Another of our favourite cosy features is that you can order breakfast baskets comprising warm fresh bread, croissants and pain au chocolat each morning. Bliss!.

Here is a quick summary of the properties :
Click the links for photos and detailed information

Gamekeeper - 2 bedrooms, sleeps 4

Coach House - 3 bedrooms, sleeps 6

Poacher - 3 bedrooms, sleeps 5

Old Stables - 2 bedrooms, sleeps 4

Granary - 3 bedrooms, sleeps 6

Little Barn - 3 bedrooms, sleeps 6

The Mews - 2 bedrooms, sleeps 4

And here are some comments from guests I have copied from the Blue Chip website.

  • "A most relaxing & enjoyable week. Fantastic welcoming hosts have just the right balance between being available or being discreetly hidden away. Cottage more like a second home than a holiday let with lots of extra little touches especially for young children...We will be back!" - Cameron Family, Surrey, July 07
  • "Really enjoyed the stay at Poacher...The beaches were fabulous - really clean and ideal for children. A great place for R&R - very peaceful and tranquil and really quiet at night. We will definitely return in the future and the cottages provided us with everything we needed and more. Thank you for a great place to stay." - Sarah, David and Adam, September 2006
  • "We had a lovely week in Poacher. Accomm was great and our children felt settled straightaway. We picked up on the happy relaxed atmosphere as soon as we drove in." - Cooper Family, Aug 07
